#1"DADDY, THAT HURTS" — The Tension Crisis
HOW YOU KNOW YOU'RE DOING IT:
- • She pulls away or winces mid-braid
- • Red marks on scalp after finishing
- • Headache complaints 20-60 minutes later
- • She asks for mom next time (you lost)
❌ ROOT CAUSE:
You're confusing SNUG with TIGHT. Pulling UP (away from scalp) instead of BACK (parallel to scalp).
THE FIX:
Pain Test (30-second intervals)
Stop and ask 'Does this hurt?' If she hesitates = LOOSEN IT NOW.
Hand Proximity Rule
Keep hands within 2 inches of scalp. Farther = more leverage = more pain.
Direction Check
Pull BACK (parallel to scalp) not UP (away from head).
Wiggle Test
After 3-4 crosses, tug side-to-side. Should move 2-3mm. Rock solid = TOO TIGHT.
#2"IT LOOKS LUMPY" — The Section Size Problem
HOW YOU KNOW YOU'RE DOING IT:
- • Braid looks bumpy and uneven
- • Different thicknesses visible
- • Doesn't lie flat against head
❌ ROOT CAUSE:
Inconsistent hair amounts. You're grabbing random sizes instead of standardized portions.
THE FIX:
Pinkie-Width Rule
Every section = width of your pinkie finger. Mental checkpoint: 'pinkie, pinkie, pinkie.'
Visual Estimation
Before crossing, pause 1 second to confirm sections are equal.
The 80/20 Fix
80% of lumpy braids are fixed by just slowing down and eyeballing each section.
#3"IT FALLS APART BY NOON" — The Loose Braid Problem
HOW YOU KNOW YOU'RE DOING IT:
- • Braid unravels within 4 hours
- • Flyaways everywhere by lunch
- • Needs to be redone mid-day
❌ ROOT CAUSE:
Too loose tension from fear of hurting her (overcorrection from Problem #1).
THE FIX:
Snug-Not-Slack Test
Braid should feel FIRM when squeezed, not squishy.
Anchor the Base
First 3-4 crosses should be slightly tighter than the rest.
Double-Wrap Elastic
Wrap 4 times minimum. 3 isn't enough for all-day hold.
#4"I KEEP LOSING TRACK" — The Section Confusion Problem
HOW YOU KNOW YOU'RE DOING IT:
- • Forget which section is left/right/middle
- • Sections tangle mid-braid
- • Have to restart multiple times
❌ ROOT CAUSE:
Going too fast. Brain can't track 3 moving objects without conscious checkpoints.
THE FIX:
2-Second Pause Rule
After EVERY cross, pause 2 seconds. Identify left-middle-right. Then proceed.
Color Coding (training)
Tie different colored ribbons to each section while learning.
Verbal Callouts
Say out loud: 'Right over middle. Left over middle.' Engages audio memory.
🚨 5-MINUTE EMERGENCY PROTOCOL
School bus in 5 minutes? Here's the survival sequence:
- 1. Quick detangle (30 seconds, major knots only)
- 2. Basic braid (60 seconds)
- 3. Double-wrap elastic (10 seconds)
- 4. Quick spray for flyaways (10 seconds)
- 5. Done. Out the door.
Perfect is the enemy of done. A basic braid that's done beats a French braid that isn't.
